With it, my wife and I explored all the beautiful bays and harbors of the Balearic Islands from Palma. We enjoyed sailing very much and were also able to enjoy the comfort on board.

As we got older, the motivation for competitive sailing waned, and we wanted to enjoy more space and comfort with a permanent crew.

Why not another sailboat?

The first thought, of course, was a larger sailboat, 30-35m long, with space for crew and 6-8 guests, a modern rig with a “lifting keel” and captive winches. I discussed plans for this with 2 designers and obtained general layout offers.

But we saw that you always have to live very closely with the crew, as there is only one deck available in that size. And you live in most rooms, with more or less large bull eyes like “in the basement.”

In addition, the wind often thwarted our plans in the past, either too much, too little, or from the wrong direction, so that we had to abandon our goal. This led to frustration and “thick air” on board. Calm weather halfway also often forced us to use the engine. But we had a sailboat. Despite all efforts, we were able to sail a maximum of 50% of the distance. On many sailing yachts, sailing is often done for less than 20% of the journey.

Sun protection should not be underestimated; no one can stand being in the blazing sun all day. The efforts with Bimini constructions on sailors often look impossible and offer the helmsman little to no protection.

Why not just a motor yacht then?

Reasons for choosing a motor yacht

A design with multiple decks offers almost three times the living space for the same length as a sailor. This makes the separation of the engine room and crew from the owner and guests much easier.

The operating costs for diesel are largely offset by the elimination of new sails, which are required every 2-3 years.

Life takes place on the main deck and above, always with a view of the entire surroundings, if you want, sheltered from the wind in the shade, or in the sun.

The fixed railing with adequate height offers protection in all weather conditions, even for dogs and children. (We always had our dog on a leash when sailing).

Cooking and eating on the go is much more pleasant, as motor yachts almost always travel upright thanks to stabilizers.

Also, rolling in a bay with swell is significantly less (even without stabilizers), as the torque with a deep ballast keel and long mast is higher on sailors.

Bathing platform constructions on sailors are always very complex; a motorboat with a vertical transom has it much easier.

The draft of a motorboat is naturally much less than that of a sailor. This makes it possible to call at shallower ports and bays.

The crew must have at least 3 experienced sailors to be able to handle a 30m+ ship even with a spinnaker.

Construction plan

At the end of 2006, I began to put my ideas for a motor yacht on paper. A maximum angle of heel >60°, at which the ship rights itself, is a good value for a motor ship. Lola achieves this easily. If the superstructures and windows are added (as long as they do not break, see safety), we even reach >80°.

Stabilizers should also minimize rolling in the harbor and at anchor.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Safety

The railing should be at least 1 m high so that you can walk safely on deck, even in rough seas. All exterior doors must be pressure-water tight. All windows must withstand at least 5 t/sqm of seawater pressure. The superstructures must be designed to be correspondingly stable.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Watertight compartments

Lola has 5 watertight compartments in the lower deck. Each department has at least 2 exits. You can reach all departments in the ship (without having to go on deck). The crew has its own exit on deck. There is also a separate exit on deck from the infirmary. The central staircase leads from the guest cabins to the sun deck.

</details>
</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Performance

The hull should have a keel for better straight-line running and a bulb (Hull Vane was not yet available; I installed it in 2016). The underwater lines should be optimized to 12 kn, which is van Ooossanen’s specialty. Bow and stern thrusters for optimal maneuverability. Separate rudders with individual control, which enable faster reactions, as the rudders can be left at 35° during maneuvers. (The rudder has virtually no effect backwards at slow speed). A large propeller for low speed and little vibration. Stabilizers should be aligned exactly in streamlines at a position with optimal efficiency.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Circumferential side decks on each deck

In order to get from stern to bow quickly, without having to climb narrow stairs and with the possibility of taking a dinghy or a mooring line with you, the side decks are open to the sea side, without obstacles. All windows and walls can be easily cleaned from the side aisles. (this happens every 1-2 weeks). Superstructures that are often seen over the entire width of the ship prevent this.

The almost 1 m wide ceilings above the side decks also provide shade for the windows. From early morning onwards, no more sun comes into the ship. This also applies to the bridge.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
No tenders on deck

The decks should be free of objects that can be soaked by seawater in rough seas and, in extreme cases, washed away. Tenders on the upper deck raise the center of gravity significantly, which is not good for a stable ship. This is what the hatch on the foredeck is for, where a tender and a Laser (or similar) can be stowed. The crane for the tender is also below deck. The second tender is housed in the stern.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
no moving parts below deck

Tables and benches should be bolted in place as seating so that they cannot slip in rough seas. Exception: chairs at the desks, which can be made seaworthy. All doors and drawers can be locked securely.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Moorings

For convenient and safe operation, all 10 bollard pairs are mounted on bollard benches. The fairleads are provided with thick rollers to prevent chafing and kinking of the lines.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Anchor

Anchor and chain should be one size larger than prescribed for the ship size. Stud link chains should be used for the chains. A stern anchor should also be attached, useful for emergencies in the harbor or when anchoring in bays.

</details>
</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Funnel

The Funnel should be used for ventilating the engine room and tanks, which eliminates noise on deck. In addition, the companionway from the sun deck has space in the Funnel.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Bathing platform

The platform at the stern is for mooring with the dinghy and for swimming. The swimming ladder is designed as a folding staircase, via which dogs can get back on board independently. Also, a “man overboard” maneuver can be easily carried out with the fixed platform.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Equipment

All important units and devices should be available at least twice. Units and pumps must be accessible from all sides for easy maintenance. The machines must be easily removed in an emergency. (We have a bolted plate in the aft bulkhead that is free of all lines. The machine can then be pulled out through the tender door. That’s how it came in)
The crew has its own kitchen, which serves as an emergency kitchen if something fails in the galley.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Insulation and sound

The entire hull and superstructure is first insulated with about 80 mm of Rockwool 130. The engine room is provided with additional aluminum Bondol sound insulation. The entire interior is installed via “Floating Design” sound and vibration dampening.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Rhino

All design drawings were created by van Oossanen with Rhino, the most common CAD program for yacht building architects.

After I learned Rhino, communication with Perry Oossanen was easier; we were able to exchange drawings. The Hull Vane delivered by van Oossanen in 2026 is also shown.

The deck plans are also based on the released Rhino drawing.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Plan changes

Top priority for the budget is complete planning. No major changes may be made during the construction phase. This often messes up other plans and all sorts of things no longer fit, which you haven’t even thought of. The result is construction time, extension, and a significant increase in construction costs. (The shipyards like to charge a lot for that). Therefore, I allowed myself 3 years for planning until the construction was commissioned at the end of 2009.

</details>

And that is the result

Discover the reasons why Lola was created and the owner’s design specifications.
